The Green Bean Recipe Everyone Asks For

Sweet and smoky bacon soy green beans in a cast iron skillet with crispy bacon and garlic.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound fresh green beans, trimmed

  • 6 slices bacon, chopped

  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce

  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1 tablespoon butter (optional, for richness)

  • Freshly ground black pepper

Instructions

  1. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil.

  2. Cook the green beans for 4–5 minutes until bright green and just tender. Drain and set aside.

  3. In a large skillet, cook the bacon until crisp.

  4. Remove most of the bacon grease, leaving about 1 tablespoon in the pan.

  5. Add the garlic and cook for about 30 seconds.

  6. Stir in the soy sauce and brown sugar.

  7. Add the green beans and toss until coated and heated through.

  8. Stir in the bacon and butter, if using.

  9. Season with black pepper and serve immediately.

Optional Variations

  • Add sliced onions and cook them with the bacon.

  • Add sliced almonds for crunch.

  • Use maple syrup instead of brown sugar for a deeper flavor.

  • Sprinkle with sesame seeds before serving.

  • Add a pinch of red pepper flakes for a little kick.

The Secret-Recipe Trick

A lot of Southern and Midwestern cooks add a splash of the bacon drippings directly to the green beans while they simmer. That's often where the deep smoky flavor comes from—not extra seasonings.
